The New Digital Divide

AI amplification creates a new generation of haves and have-nots. Access to capable AI systems — and the skill to use them — compounds advantage.

The New Digital Divide is not about internet access — it's about AI leverage. Some individuals, teams, and organizations are amplified by AI: they ship faster, think deeper, explore more, and compound knowledge across sessions. Others use AI as a search engine or a spell checker. The gap between these groups grows over time because AI amplification compounds: each gain enables the next gain. The person who builds a stateful AI workflow today is 10x more productive tomorrow. The person who doesn't is exactly as productive tomorrow as they were today.

Why it matters
The New Digital Divide has policy, education, and economic implications. Skills like prompt engineering, system design for AI, and AI-assisted workflow design are becoming as fundamental as computer literacy was 20 years ago. Organizations that invest in these skills will pull ahead; those that don't will fall behind at an accelerating pace.
In practice
Invest in AI literacy across your organization, not just for technical teams. The divide isn't between companies that use AI and those that don't — it's between those that use AI effectively and those that use it superficially.
