Principles / The Context is the Product
§ Principle 19 of 23
The Context is the Product
The model is commoditizing. Context — persistent, inspectable, searchable, sharable — is the durable competitive advantage.
The Context is the Product is a market thesis. As models converge in capability (driven by the Intelligence Cascade) and become interchangeable commodities, the differentiating factor shifts from "which model you use" to "what context you've built around it." A team's accumulated knowledge — project context, decisions, conventions, preferences, domain expertise — becomes more valuable than the model that processes it. The context layer is the moat: it takes months to build, it compounds in value, and it doesn't become obsolete when a new model is released.
Why it matters
This principle has strategic implications for both AI users and AI companies. For users: invest in building and maintaining your context, because it's the asset that survives model changes. For AI companies: the value proposition shifts from "better model" to "better context management" — persistent, inspectable, searchable, sharable context is the product.
In practice
Treat your AI context as a first-class asset. Version it, back it up, make it portable, and make it inspectable. When you switch models or tools, your context should come with you. If it can't, you're locked in — and your context isn't a product, it's a prisoner.
