The Portability Imperative
Knowledge locked in one tool, one vendor, or one person is knowledge at risk.
The Portability Imperative is the architectural response to the Expertise Trap and vendor lock-in. If your AI knowledge — the accumulated context, decisions, preferences, and domain understanding — is trapped inside a specific tool or vendor's system, you're vulnerable. The vendor could change pricing, discontinue the product, or degrade the service, and your accumulated knowledge goes with it. Portability means your knowledge is yours: exportable, inspectable, and transferable to any compatible system.
Why it matters
AI tools are young and the market is volatile. Today's leading platform may be tomorrow's deprecated service. Teams that build extensive context inside non-portable systems are making a bet that the platform will exist and remain suitable indefinitely. The Portability Imperative says: don't make that bet. Build on portable foundations.
In practice
Before committing to an AI platform, check: can you export your accumulated context in a structured, usable format? Can you import it into a different system? If the answer is no, your knowledge is at risk. Choose platforms that treat your context as your property, not their feature.
