Automation Dependency

Reliance on agents to the point where the human can't perform the task without them.

Automation Dependency is Skill Atrophy taken to its logical conclusion. It's not just that the skill has degraded — it's that the human can't function without the AI. The workflow, the tools, the mental models — everything is built around the assumption that the agent is available. When the agent is down, rate-limited, or producing poor results, the human doesn't fall back to manual work — they're stuck. Automation Dependency is a systems risk because it creates a single point of failure: the AI.

Example
A content team has built their entire editorial workflow around AI: ideation, drafting, editing, SEO optimization, and scheduling. When their AI provider has a 48-hour outage, the team produces zero content. Not reduced content — zero. The writers haven't drafted from scratch in a year. The editors don't remember the SEO checklist because the AI handled it. The team is fully dependent on a system they don't control and can't replace quickly.
