Capability Stacking

Building compound capabilities by layering AI tools and memory — each new capability makes the next one easier.

Capability Stacking is the systemic version of Knowledge Compounding. Where Knowledge Compounding is about deepening understanding in one domain, Capability Stacking is about how capabilities in different domains combine to create new, emergent capabilities. A team that has AI-assisted coding, AI-assisted testing, and AI-assisted deployment can combine them into AI-assisted continuous delivery — a capability that none of the individual pieces could provide alone. Each capability layer makes the next layer more powerful.

Example
A solo developer builds capability layers over six months. Month 1: AI-assisted coding (can build features faster). Month 2: adds AI-assisted testing (features are now tested automatically). Month 3: adds AI-assisted code review (quality improves). Month 4: adds AI-assisted deployment (shipping is automated). Month 5: adds AI-assisted monitoring (issues are detected automatically). Month 6: the combined stack enables something new — the developer can ship a feature from idea to production in 2 hours, with tests, review, deployment, and monitoring. No single capability made this possible; the stack made it possible.
