Cognitive Amplification

The use of AI and computational systems to extend, accelerate, and enhance human thought, reasoning, creativity, memory, decision-making, and problem-solving beyond normal individual capacity.

Cognitive Amplification is the umbrella concept for this entire category. Unlike automation, which replaces human effort with machine effort, Cognitive Amplification increases the human's effective intelligence. The person thinks better, faster, and further because the AI handles the parts that were slowing them down: information retrieval, pattern matching, boilerplate generation, and exploration of alternatives. The human remains the director; the AI is the amplifier. The result is work that neither the human nor the AI could produce alone.

A researcher studying climate policy uses AI to process 500 academic papers in a field adjacent to their expertise. Without AI, they might read 30 papers in a week and synthesize the key arguments. With AI amplification, they process all 500 in a day: the AI extracts key claims, identifies contradictions, maps the citation network, and surfaces the most influential arguments. The researcher then applies their domain expertise to evaluate the synthesized information, identify gaps, and formulate novel hypotheses. The researcher's output isn't AI-generated — it's human insight amplified by AI processing capacity.
