Maintained Competence

The user stays technically capable of doing the work themselves even while delegating.

Maintained Competence is the deliberate practice of keeping skills sharp even when delegation is available. It's the developer who still writes code by hand sometimes, not because the agent can't, but because they want to stay capable. It's the writer who drafts without AI assistance periodically to maintain their voice. Maintained Competence is insurance against Automation Dependency, Learned Helplessness, and the inevitable moments when the agent is unavailable, wrong, or insufficient.

Example
A development team implements "manual Mondays" — one day a week where they code without AI assistance. It's slower, and the code isn't always as polished, but the team maintains their ability to work independently. When their AI provider has a week-long outage, they're inconvenienced but not paralyzed. Their competitors, who never practiced without AI, lose an entire week of productivity. Maintained Competence turned a crisis into an inconvenience.
